Iron Kβ′, Kβ 1,3 X‐ray emission spectra are reported for complexes with spin‐states S = 5/2, 3/2 and 1/2. It is proposed that the highly asymmetric shape of the Kβ 1,3 peak might be due to charge‐transfer processes occurring simultaneously with the 3p → 1s transition. Since these processes vary greatly with the nature of the ligands, only a qualitative relationship exists between the relative intensity of Kβ′ (to Kβ 1,3 ) and the number of unpaired 3d electrons. However, if the ligand environment is held constant, then it seems reasonable to use Kβ′ : Kβ 1,3 to determine the number of unpaired electrons.
