The Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute (SAMSI) is a national institute in the USA devoted to forging a synthesis of the statistical sciences and the applied mathematical sciences with disciplinary science to confront the very hardest and most important data and model‐driven scientific challenges. The vision of SAMSI is described herein, as well as the research programs that have been undertaken at SAMSI. Opportunities for becoming involved with SAMSI are also highlighted. Such opportunities exist for senior researchers, new researchers, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, undergraduate students, and K‐12 teachers. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
