This excellent series has given readers an informative and wide‐ranging view of the history and present status of observational techniques and of forecasting. This contribution is rather different. It is, perhaps, polemical rather than factual: a heartfelt lament that the communication of forecasts to paying customers – and, in the case of public service forecasts and warnings, to the general public – has been badly neglected but is nevertheless a very important aspect of forecasting. My hope is that these words will provoke a healthy debate from which we might all learn something. Copyright © 2011 Royal Meteorological Society
