A rare severe freezing rain event affected Jersey, Channel Islands in early February 1841, during a rather cold and snowy winter. A brief explanation is given of the atmospheric conditions and synoptic weather pattern which produce freezing rain. Contemporary diaries, local newspaper reports and other historical information were used to construct a detailed chronology of this extreme weather event. The devastating effects of the glaze on the landscape of the island, the local economy and social life are also documented.
