Thunderstorm detection within 100km using a single sensor to measure the variation in electrostatic field between 1 and 45Hz is discussed. Case studies demonstrating the use of electrostatic variability in lightning detection and warning of overhead thunderstorm development are presented, including the ability to locate lightning when electrostatic signals are combined with radio direction finding.
