An actuator disc CFD model of the flow through a wind turbine in a diffuser is developed and validated. Further, it is shown theoretically from a 1D analysis that the Betz limit can be exceeded by a factor proportional to the relative increase in mass flow through the rotor induced by the diffuser. The theoretical 1D result is verified by the CFD model. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
