A non‐contact microwave technique has been applied for measuring the change in the cross‐sectional area of rectangular rods made of polyvinyl‐chloride based plastics. It was found that, up to axial stresses of 20 kg/cm 2 , the relative change in the side of the rectangular cross‐section remains below 1%. Poisson's ratio was derived for PVC compounds with several concentrations of DOP. Good agreement with calculated values was obtained.
