The reaction of maleic anhydride (MAH) with molten copolymers of ethylene with methyl acrylate and vinyl acetate in the presence of a peroxide catalyst yields soluble, maleated copolymers containing appended units of MAH, accompanied by insoluble, crosslinked copolymers. The amount of crosslinking that occurs in the presence of the peroxide alone is increased in the presence of MAH‐peroxide. The crosslinking is suppressed in the presence of stearamide and caprolactam.
