A general overview of the analytical techniques available to qualitate and quantitate the additive stabilizers in polyolefins is presented. A review of several sample preparation techniques, including polymer dissolution, supercritical fluid extraction and microwave dissolution is presented. This is followed by a general overview of the various chromatographic techniques, ranging from thin layer chromatography to supercritical fluid chromatography, which may be used for stabilizer analysis. Several spectroscopic analytical techniques that are used in the research environment are discussed, as well as techniques that may be used in the production environment for process control. Some of the practical considerations faced by analytical chemists are also described.
