AlTiN coatings were developed over the last 10 years mainly for cutting applications. Besides composition and architecture of AlTiN coatings also PVD technology based on the reactive cathodic vacuum arc evaporation was permanently improved in view of various application fields. Different basic processes were developed in appropriate PVD units to cover wide spread process demands. Both, low temperature processes for decorative coatings including deposition on galvanized plastics as well as high temperature processes for cemented carbide tools can be realized with optimized processes. This paper presents PVD units and selected applications like gear hobs, broaches, ball end mills, cutting blades, forming tools and decorative coatings.
