Today's colleges and universities increasingly recognize the value of diversity and inclusion as important components of community development. However, many campus cultures are just beginning to understand and support the fluidity that exists within the range of LGBTQ identities. Dolores G. Norton's theory of the dual perspective demonstrates that subcultures have unique values, traditions, beliefs, and dialects that often differ from dominant societal norms. The members of these subcultures are nonetheless expected to blend into the dominant culture, an expectation that sometimes has compromising effects on self‐worth.
