Abstract The self‐retaining catheter was developed in the 1930s without recognising the need to preserve the antibacterial mechanisms of the bladder. Professor Feneley discusses how future research should be seeking a urine collection system that enables the bladder to fill and empty regularly and completely, thus mimicking the wash‐out effect of the healthy bladder. He provides an example of the way in which new technologies can improve the quality of life for the catheter user. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons
