The 7th Annual Meeting of the British Uro‐oncology Group in Birmingham highlighted many controversial areas in the management of urological malignancies. The authors summarise a lively debate on the optimal management for men diagnosed with locally advanced prostate cancer. They highlight areas of controversy and discuss the progress that has been made in the past decade to improve both survival and quality of life for men with this disease. In the next issue, they will cover controversies in the management of advanced prostate cancer. Copyright © 2011 Wiley Interface Ltd
