The situation with respect to the three main liver diseases affecting adult men in the UK, namely alcoholic liver disease, chronic hepatitis B and C infection and the new epidemic of fatty liver disease, is truly horrendous and continuing to get worse. These conditions are to a large extent self‐induced, but if detected early, some reversal of the disease process is possible. Copyright © 2010 Wiley Interface Ltd
