Many factors determine the definition of scholarship at any given time, including the discipline, the priorities of the institution and academic unit, and the interests of the individual. This chapter discusses these influences, traces recent developments in how we view the scholarly role of faculty members, and it recommends an institutional approach for bringing fairness and quality into faculty reward systems.
