The author advocates for greater attention to the unspoken, and potentially repressive, dynamics that faculty may rely upon to cultivate a disciplinary identity in the classroom. Being transparent and critically reflective about the language, ideas, and practices employed in class will empower students and augment their cognitive abilities in new ways.
