Case Traditional herbal (kampo) medicine has been used since ancient times to treat various types of musculoskeletal pain. The aim of this report was to describe the successful treatment of menopausal musculoskeletal symptoms ( MMS ) with kampo medicine, and to discuss its application to MMS . We observed the clinical course of three patients with MMS using kampo medicines: keishikaryojutsubuto and boiogito, or keishikaryojutsubuto alone. Outcome The three female patients (average age, 52.3 years; range, 50–54 years) did not fulfill the diagnostic criteria for any rheumatic or connective tissue diseases involving joint or muscle pain. They were diagnosed with MMS based on clinical feature. The kampo treatment ameliorated arthralgia, myalgia, and stiffness in the hands, markedly improving quality of life. Conclusion Kampo medicine is safe, and useful as an additional treatment for MMS , in the field of rheumatology, in addition to primary health care.
