The positive social impact of global commerce on an increasingly interdependent world is challenged by civilsociety. A diversely supported backlash threatens political restrictions on the free market paradigm and loss ofglobalization's momentum. Opposition is documented in the historical record and an expanding base of criticalliterature. The power balance of the three components of society‐political, economic and civil is in flux.Business's only stabilizing strategy is to acknowledge and act on its commensurate social responsibility.Optimism is found in a minority of individual business actions, however the speed with which the majority willadapt is crucial. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
