Venezuela is entering the year 2002 with a new political and economic context characterized by an almostcomplete control of power by the elected President Hugo Chavez and a new national constitution approved inDecember 15, 1999. This article gives a brief description of the Venezuelan political, economic, financial, legal,and regulatory systems and it examines the extent to which the changes brought about by this new political contextaffect foriegn investment and business practices in the country. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
