This letter proposes a hybrid cooperative transmission scheme for energy reduction in multi‐hop clustered wireless sensor networks (WSNs) where single‐input single‐output (SISO) and spatial modulation (SM)‐based cooperative MIMO (CMIMO‐SM) schemes are jointly used as the transmission candidates. In this work, we consider a linear all‐transmission scenario where the intermediate clusters act not only as forwarding clusters but also transmitting clusters. The numerical experiments demonstrate that the energy reduction of WSN is achieved by choosing the optimal hop length and appropriate transmission candidate. © 2020 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.
