Synthetic chemistry is like a game. Playing with molecules and reagents may be regarded as a game, in which various functional groups are sacrificed but novel valuable functional groups are created. Highly functionalized cyclic amino acids, among them fluorinated derivatives, constitute an important class of bioactive compounds of increasing interest that have been a target of research in organic and medicinal chemistry during the past decade.
