In Japan, there are two common suffruticose species of the genus Pertya Sch. Bip. (Asteraceae: Pertyeae),P. scandens (Thumb.) Sch. Bip. and P. glabrescens Sch. Bip. ex Nakai, the former with pilose stems and leaves and the latter with glabrous to glabrate stems and leaves. Recently, however, it was concluded that the two species should be referred to as P. ovata Maxim. and P. scandens, the application of the latter name shifting to the species with glabrous stems. The lectotype of Erigeron scandens Thunb. (= P. scandens) was carefully examined and it was identified as the species with pilose stems and leaves. Pertya glabrescens Sch. Bip. ex Nakai was determined to be the correct name for the glabrous species. Lectotypes for P. glabrescens, as well as the synonyms P. scandens f. maximowicziana Franch., P. scandens f. schulziana Franch., and P. glabrescens var. viridis Nakai are designated.
