This paper describes Part I of a two‐part study that demonstrates how using viscous dampers—Taylor Dampers in this case—significantly improves the performance of tall buildings. Part II will appear in the December issue of this Journal . The limit state of primary focus is the first structural damage limit state. Drifts are improved with the use of Taylor Dampers and also very significantly there is a large reduction in floor accelerations and damage to personal occupant contents.
