A procedure is proposed for determining the value of the resistance factor for any selected limit state that is part of a building design. The approach is perhaps not new but a collection of previous disjoint publications that are based on limited mathematics and the value of the Bayesian decision‐making methods. For that reason, it is called the structural engineering approach. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
