Abstract This study adapts Hall's 3‐dimensional morphology of systems engineering to develop a platform that has procedure and creativity for the system architecture of small service businesses. The proposed platform prescribes a five‐step procedure for developing and propagating the system architecture, namely, Concept Exploration, System Development, Verification and Validation, Disposition and Delivery, and Maintenance and Distribution. In each step, the business and system requirements are identified and analyzed in order to establish the detailed system architecture. Conventional systems engineering processes are used to determine the correlation between the business objectives, the tactics, the business system requirements, and the business processes, respectively, and to resolve any conflicts which arise. This development platform provides a generic, complete, clear, and systematic procedure to replace the traditional ways of operating for small service businesses, and thus contributes toward their long‐term survival. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
