Several academics believe that a dominant factor in the market success of corporations is the ability to create and manage robust, flexible, and effective product platforms. Effective platform leadership and platform architecture play a key role in product success. This paper compares two large platforms. These are the telco (Telephone Company) IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) platform and the cable IPTV platform. Both platforms are competing to provide similar services to the same set of customers. This paper introduces a new term, “Mega Platform,” to describe large platforms like IPTV. This paper develops a set of metrics to compare the two competing mega platforms. The paper concludes by recommending specific strategies for both cable and telco. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
