Abstract The cover picture shows the atrium with the south roof and the vertical façade of the United States Institute of Peace, Washington D. C. The south roof has a total surface area of 1100 m², covers the atrium and spans 24 m between the concrete building parts. The front part of the roof is supported by the vertical façade which is horizontally supported by a tied arch. Three 10.5 m long steel props fan out from this horizontal tied arch along the façade and meet the roof near the middle of the cantilever, leaving the tip of the roof untouched.
