A methodology for the seismic protection of historical and monumental structures is presented. Specific aspects, due to their peculiar character are illustrated. Influence of critical factors like earthquake intensity and local conditions is described. The effectiveness of structural control techniques for the rehabilitation of historical structures is emphasized. Due to uncertainties involved, a probabilistic approach is presented and the use of fragility curves is demonstrated. The whole process is illustrated through two rehabilitation case studies of historical structures. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
