‘VinCES’ stands for ‘Vibration in Civil Engineering Structures’ and carries with it the meaning of the ancient Latin word ‘vinces’, which means ‘Thou shall win’. It was a project financed by the Italian Ministry for the Education, the University and the Scientific Research in the years 2004–2005. The research project was aimed at the optimal allocation of resources for building and maintaining civil engineering structures, both improving the available techniques for the mitigation of vibration‐induced problems which may occur during their service life and developing new methods for monitoring and assessing the structural safety using dynamic diagnostic tools. This special issue presents a selection of papers reporting the main findings from the Project. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
