Devices for protecting civil structures against external disturbances such as seismic waves or dynamic loads are computed by using fixed‐order ℋ ∞ controllers in this paper. Several solutions for the controllers are analysed and compared in order to obtain the most suitable solution for their application to protect buildings, specially for those buildings that are already constructed but not conveniently protected. A new pseudo‐hybrid solution is also proposed, designed and compared to other alternatives with very promising results. The obtained fixed‐order ℋ ∞ controllers are simpler but similar in performance to those obtained with conventional control techniques. Moreover, they are also more reliable because of the economy in the number of components. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
