Diethylaminohydroxypropyl (DEAHP) starch ion‐exchangers (OH ‐ form) were alkylated with aqueous solutions of 2 ‐chloroethanol. Alkylation on nitrogen resulted in the formation of quarternary ammonium groups in C1 ‐ form.
