Seven starch‐based ion exchange materials were incorporated into handsheets, and the sheets were examined for both physical and heavy metal removal properties. Standard TAPPI methods and atomic absorption spectroscopy were used to examine these properties. Handsheets containing 20 to 50% by weight of the starch product yielded acceptable physical and functional properties.
