Degree of substitution (DS) of starch xanthate is easily determined by titration with sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide solutions using a technique designed to minimize interferences from byproducts. Xanthate contents measured by titration agree well with those determined from S‐benzyl derivatives. Standard deviation at the 0.14 DS level was 0.007 with 11 degrees o freedom.
