A long term study was made to relate corn quality with processing problems. Hundreds of samples were taken from process streams under widely varying process conditions and examination revealed visual evidence of misdirection of products. Steeped corn was dissected and many variations in water content and distribution were found. Corn grading methods were compared with process results and, in general, real damage was greater than reported. Various qualities of corn were tested under germinating conditions versus soaking in water, steepwater and steepwater distillates and comparisons made of water content and distribution. An hypothesis was formed which endeavors to explain how corn quality affects the mechanics of component separation.
