Abstract A large number of biologically important systems can be studied by use of the carbohydrate complexing protein, concanavalin A. Carbohydrate‐concanavalin A interactions have proven useful in examining the structure and functions of isolated carbohydrate‐containing compounds and to study the surface properties of cell membranes. Present knowledge concerning the carbohydrate binding site of concanavalin A is reviewed. Based on current data, it was suggested that an accurate model to account for concanavalin A‐carbohydrate complex formation could not be constructed.
