Many program managers in student affairs bring methods and values from their graduate training and entry‐level positions that do not adequately prepare them for the conflicting roles of middle management. Building alliances within a political perspective is an approach they can use to manage the dynamics of being caught in the middle and thereby more easily accomplish their goals.
