A collaborative profession‐wide effort has resulted in the establishment of professional standards of practice in student services and student development programs. These standards have the capacity to contribute in many ways to the improvement of undergraduate education. The standards recognize the value of out‐of‐class experience as a valid component of student development and have great utility for enhancing self‐study processes.
