Reduction pretreatment is a novel process to improve the internal quality of casting slabs, in which limited works are available. This paper therefore examines the application of reduction pretreatment to casting billets to investigate the improvement of microstructures and properties. The casting billets obtained with/without the reduction pretreatment were measured to reveal the effects of this technique. The results indicate that, a certain amount of reduction pretreatment is capable of closing porosity, accelerating diffusion, and crushing dendrites. Moreover, the ductility of the billet is increased with the improvement of the porosity, segregation, and microstructure. It is noteworthy, however, some cracks might be generated due to excessive amounts of reduction.
