The article gives an overview on the historical development, specific features, and achievements of research on metal‐forming technologies at the Institute of Metal Forming at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. Being significantly involved in research on metal‐forming technologies since 1928, the history of the institute reflects the general developments of this scientific subject since this time. The practical orientation of research and the specific focus on material‐related issues and effects have been the major strengths of the Institute of Metal Forming. By using most modern laboratory facilities and experimental plants, relevant data are gained and used in order to induce new scientific developments and to find solutions for transferring these into technologies applicable in industrial production. With its specific concept which has been the basis of the successful development, the Institute of Metal Forming is well prepared to face future challenges in metal‐forming technology.
