The desulfurization abilities of CaO‐Al 2 O 3 ‐10% SiO 2 and CaO–CaF 2 slags used in secondary refining process were studied and compared under the same experimental conditions in a vacuum induction furnace at 1600 °C. The desulfurization mechanism was proposed through thermodynamic analysis using FactSage 6.4. The results showed that the desulfurization ability would increase with the increase of liquid fraction in slag in the case of CaO oversaturated slag. In the case of CaO unsaturated slag, the desulfurization ability was determined by the activity of CaO and Al 2 O 3 and the activity coefficient of CaS in slag. The results of industrial experiment were in accordance with that of laboratory experiment.
