Ultra‐fast cooling is an advanced technology in hot rolling for the development of low‐cost and high‐performance steels where precise control of temperature is the key factor to obtain desired mechanical properties. The conventional cooling system does not have a good adaptive capability because the pressure of cooling water and water flow of each valve is different. Thus, key components in ultra‐fast cooling are introduced, namely sequential controlled structure is proposed to implement the dynamic stochastic control of ultra‐fast cooling temperature (UFCT) and coiling temperature (CT). Next, a mathematical model based on ultra‐fast cooling process is described. Furthermore, the velocity controlled strategy for each strip element including the time, velocity, and distance (TVD) curve calculation method and on‐line cyclic modification and calculation (OCMC) strategy is designed to minimize the fluctuation in velocity. With the help of proposed velocity controlled strategy, the temperature fluctuation affected by velocity variation is effectively eliminated and the system realizes accurate temperature control of UFCT and CT. The system has been applied successfully in steel production with high accuracy control laying a solid foundation for the development of new products.
