Upon solidification of the fusion zone of an austenitic weld the grains have a preferential <100> orientation aligning with the macroscopic solidification direction. The bulk material properties are consequently locally transversally isotropic with the solidification direction as fiber axis. A method is described to calculate the elastic and plastic anisotropy of the fusion zone bulk material and to implement the transversal isotropic material in Finite Element models for welding stress calculations. Results show a difference in predicted stress in the vicinity of the fusion zone when compared with a model with isotropic material properties.
