The chemical wear mechanism in the slagline of a steel ladle has been investigated by measuring the wetting between molten steels and slags and MgO‐C‐refractories using an optical dilatometer and SEM‐analysis. The results support the wear mechanism in which the graphite is dissolved in steel while the oxide part is destroyed due to dissolution of MgO grains into the slag.
