The setting of the optimum process parameters for high‐quality roll‐cladded composites requires detailed knowledge of their effects on adhesion and formability. This being the case, it is the objective of this paper to qualify and quantify both the thermal processes and the friction in the roller gap. The objective was worked out in three steps: the first step was to determine the friction with the aid of the forward‐slip procedure. In this case, the process parameters of temperature, rolling speed und degree of formability are of particular interest. In the second step, and by means of these process parameters, the friction coefficients were evaluated and modelled using the methods of statistical trials planning. In the third step, thermographic images were taken in the roller gap. This determined in particular the effect of degree of formability and rolling speed on the heat development.
