The Institute for Mechanics and Fluiddynamics (IMFD) and the Institute for Iron‐ and Steel Technology (IEST) of the University of Mining and Technology Freiberg, and FOSECO GmbH, organised a workshop on fluid mechanics in the continuous casting process. The workshop was held in Freiberg, Germany, from October 12‐14, 2005. Experts from academic institutes and industry came together to present and discuss recent research results and technological improvements in fluid mechanics for the continuous casting process. Not only did participants learn about the very recent advances in this field, they also had the opportunity to meet colleagues, share experience and create new networks.
