The temperature profile inside the submerged‐arc furnace (S.A.F) has a significant influence on the quality of the ferro‐chromium produced. This profile is controlled by the degree of pre‐reduction the ore is subjected to. A mathematical model has been developed to describe the temperature profile inside the S.A.F and the influence of pre‐reduction on the profile has been explored. Increasing levels of pre‐reduction increases the temperatures in the various zones of the furnace. Other factors remaining the same, this is expected to increase the level of silicon in the hot metal. This can be controlled by controlling the heat generated in the furnace.
