In this work an austenitic stainless steel AISI 316 L (1.4404) was gas nitrided at 540°C. The nitride layer was characterised by means of X‐ray analysis, SEM, TEM and electron probe X‐ray analysis. A fine lamellar structure comprising ∊ and γ' nitrides was formed. Nickel paritioned into γ'‐Fe 4 N type nitride while chromium partitioned into the ∊‐Fe 2–3 N type nitride. A layer formation mechanism was proposed considering a local partition of the alloying elements Cr and Ni.
