The theory and practice of the torsion test both at room temperature and at elevated temperatures are described. The calculation of the local shear stress and shear strain at a “critical radius” gives more accurate results than the conventional test evaluation for the surface of the specimen. Recommendations are given for the optimum specimen geometry depending on the temperature. Sources of error and uncertainty are discussed.
