In this investigation an electochemical cell has been designed for the direct measurement of silicon content in hot metal. Data of EMF vs. Si concentration have been obtained in Fe–Si–C sat melts at 1500°C, for Si content from 0.05 to 1.2%. Experimental values agree fairly well with EMF values calculated from thermodynamic data. Owing to its sensitivity and long working life the sensor can be used for continuous, long term measurement in hot metal.
