Most steel plant laboratories in the Benelux‐countries are equipped with ICP‐AES and AA‐spectrometers dedicated to the analysis of samples in solution, mainly for the quantitative determinations of cations. These methods, however, are hardly suitable for the analysis of anions; hence, the interest in applying the ion chromatography method for the determination of these ions. The “Centre de Recherches Métallurgiques” studied different applications of ion chromatography (I.C.) in steel industry laboratories. In this paper, four major applications of this technique are described: analysis of waste waters, determination of the anions in surface treatment baths, analysis of rolling mill coolants, and analysis of sulphur in steel.
